Biography of Dr. Jana Matthews
Dr. Jana Matthews, founding President and CEO of Boulder Quantum Ventures, is an expert on entrepreneurial leadership and business growth. She works with CEOs, corporate executives and their top teams to unlock growth potential. In addition, she consults with foundations, government agencies and organizations of CEOs about how to create better entrepreneurial leaders, organizations that can sustain growth, and healthy communities with developing economies.

She has also written or co-authored seven books. Her most recent books focus on how to grow a company: Lessons from the Edge: Survival Skills for Starting and Growing a Company, Leading at the Speed of Growth, Journey from Entrepreneur to CEO, and Building the Awesome Organization: Six Components that Drive Entrepreneurial Growth. Other books include Winning Combinations, Entrepreneurial Partnerships Between Large and Small Companies (co-authored with Jim Botkin), Growing New Ventures, Creating New Jobs: Principles and Practices of Business Incubation (co-authored with Mark Rice). She also writes a monthly column on growth for the Wall Street Journal’s www.Startupjournal.com, for www.Entreworld.org and has been recently quoted in Inc., Entrepreneur, USA Today, Investor’s Business Daily, The Wall Street Journal, CNNfn and many other media.
Kauffman Foundation
In 1992, Jana Matthews was one of three people recruited to create the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the Kauffman Foundation.
She was the architect of several highly successful programs designed to teach entrepreneurs how to manage growth, i.e., CD-ROMs, web-casts, Kauffman Gatherings of Entrepreneurs, Kauffman Signature Series. Working with seventeen venture capital companies, she also designed and developed the Kauffman Fellows Program, a two-year apprenticeship in venture capital, and recruited the charter class.
Founded three companies
Her first company, NCHEMS Management Services, was focused on creating successful university-industry partnerships. Her second company, M&H Group, Inc., was focused on helping communities create technology-based economic development. In 1992, Business Week identified M&H Group as one of three companies in the USA that understood how to create “hot spots” in cold economies. She has consulted with hundreds of companies and governments in the US and abroad and has served on a variety of boards (corporate, incubator, research park, medical research institute, and state high tech council).
In 2000, Matthews founded her third company, Boulder Quantum Ventures. She works with founding entrepreneurs, CEOs, corporate executives and top teams to unlock their company’s growth potential. She also helps foundations, government agencies and CEO membership organizations develop programs around leading and managing growth. Clients include CEOs of growth companies, the Women Presidents’ Organization, Young Entrepreneurs’ Organization, American Management Association - UK, EDF Ventures, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, the IceHouse (NZ), Foundation for Enterprise Development, the Kauffman and Lowe Foundations and many others.
Education and Honors
Dr. Matthews received her undergraduate degree from Earlham College, has studied at the University of London, Yale University and received a doctorate from Harvard University. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of University-Related Research Parks, the Colorado Technology Incubator, and the KU Medical Institute Board of Directors. She was the first woman appointed to the Colorado Advanced Technology Institute, was a finalist in the White House Fellows program, was one of four women nominated for the Colorado 2001 Women in Technology Award, and has received many other awards and honors
