Center for Women’s Business Research  ·  September 29, 1995

Washington, DC -- The National Foundation for Women Business Owners (NFWBO), in partnership with the Ural Women’s Association, has won a grant to conduct a research study among women-owned businesses in Russia.

NFWBO Research Goes Global

NFWBO will design and conduct a survey to gather information on the traits and characteristics of women-owned businesses, including questions on the challenges and future plans of these business owners. This information will be compared with similar data the NFWBO has collected from women-owned businesses in the United States.

The grant is a part of the 1995 Special Projects Competition of the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), with funds provided by the U.S. Department of State (Title VIII).

NFWBO Director of Research Julie R. Weeks says, "Our Foundation has made tremendous strides in recent years documenting the economic and social contributions of women-owned businesses to the U.S. economy. We are excited about the opportunity to expand our efforts beyond our borders, especially in an area seeing such rapid growth and change. The research results will contribute significantly to the body of knowledge about women business owners worldwide."

Weeks will travel to Yekaterinburg, Russia in October to convene the study’s steering committee, which is comprised of representatives of women’s business associations throughout Russia including the cities of Izhevsk, Moscow, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, Samara, Tomsk, Voronezh, and Yekaterinburg. The study’s findings will be published in the Spring of 1996.

Weeks is a native of Glen Arbor, Michigan and a graduate of The Leelanau School and the University of Michigan. She has been to Russia three times previously, to speak to several conferences of women from Russia and other Newly Independent States about the uses of market and survey research in a market economy and in the democratic process, and to share information about the growth of women-owned businesses in the U.S. As a part of two of these conferences, she conducted opinion surveys among participants and presented survey results at the end of the conference.

The National Foundation for Women Business Owners is the research, training and education arm of the National Association of Women Business Owners. The mission of NFWBO is to support the growth of women business owners and their organizations through gathering and sharing knowledge.
