Washington, DC-The National Foundation for Women Business Owners (NFWBO) was recognized recently at an international conference for its decade of groundbreaking research that has created new opportunities for women business owners worldwide.

NFWBO’s Executive Director Sharon G. Hadary and Director of Research Julie R. Weeks each received an Artemis Award from the Euro-American Women’s Council. The NFWBO leaders were honored at the Council’s Fourth Annual Global Forum for Women Entrepreneurs in Athens, Greece; IBM was the principal sponsor of the conference.

The awards were presented in recognition of NFWBO’s research efforts in nearly a dozen countries that have revealed the significant number, growth, economic impact, and characteristics of woman-owned businesses.

“As a result of NFWBO’s research, women business owners around the world are recognized for the economic impact of their firms and their unique contributions to the business marketplace,” explained Lois E. Haber, CLU, ChFC, NFWBO Chair and President & CEO of Delaware Valley Financial Services, Inc. in Berwyn, Pa. “NFWBO has highlighted that, around the world, woman-owned firms typically comprise between 1/4 and 1/3 of the business population and that they share many of the same personal characteristics and business challenges.”

Cherie Piebes, Global Market Executive, Women Entrepreneurs, IBM, noted that, "NFWBO is playing a crucial role in meeting the growing need from countries around the world for demographic information about women entrepreneurs, as well as data on how they finance their firms, use technology, obtain training, and grow their businesses. This information has been a wake-up call to multinational companies like IBM, government policy-makers, financial institutions, and business educators."

The growing trend of entrepreneurship by women around the world is changing the shape of the global economy. “The award to NFWBO by the Euro-American Women’s Council recognizes the importance of NFWBO’s research to understanding the challenges and contributions of women business owners and their enterprises,” IBM’s Piebes observed.

NFWBO has studied women-owned businesses in nearly a dozen countries around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Mexico, Russia, the United States, and at international conferences in Africa and Latin America.
